Watchman

The security guard will remain in ready position in the exhibition space, but with his eyes closed.

If one day we came across a security guard with his eyes closed in the space he is safeguarding, would we feel the space security is somehow threatened? Some would argue that he is avoiding the liability to watch over the place, not being compliant. One could also think he was tired and perhaps dozed off, and other could remember the allegory of justice, seeing him blind – blindfolded. There are other nonsenses in this surveillance, either by those who focus their attention on the employee, failing to think of him in terms of his demands, or by those who see a fair attitude, because virtuous and austere, in the closed eyelids of those who protect them.

Amador e Jr. Segurança Patrimonial Ltda. presents Watchman, a service in which, conciliating the public demands of the property that requires surveillance with the private existence of those who guard it, their security guards will remain with their eyes closed, but in position. The body of the security guard and the notions of visibility and invisibility become the subject. At the same time, due to the unstable balance between what is in the closed eyes of the employees and everything that requires their gaze, a doubt is raised – is the physical presence deprived of the sense of sight enough to safeguard? In this unprovable fear, it escapes that Watchman keeps these workers vigilant to what can never be seen by his audience.
